POSITION SUMMARY

Faculty members teach assigned classes in accordance with the College’s established policies and guidelines, assist in student advising, fulfill committee assignments, perform various institutional and community support activities, and perform responsibilities as assigned.

Instructors at CWI are expected to focus on mastering disciplinary content, developing and strengthening their abilities in preparing and presenting instructional materials, facilitating student success, and assessing student performance. As Instructors progress toward the next rank, they transition from absorbing information about how the institution functions to more meaningfully influencing their department and school. Instructors make contributions that have a direct impact on student, programmatic, and departmental success.

*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB *

Instruction

  • Teach courses within the Computer Science discipline (CPSC 121 and CPSC 221)
  • Prepare curriculum materials, syllabi, and other instructional materials
  • Provides current copies of course syllabi to the Department Chair each semester
  • Recommend textbook adoptions in collaboration with other faculty in the department
  • Teach a minimum semester credit load of courses in accordance with the descriptions published in the CWI catalog. Teaching assignments may include online, evening, and off-campus courses
  • Plan, develop, and present organized learning opportunities for students in accordance with approved course outlines
  • Assist in the development and recommendation of new courses and programs of study at the Department level
  • Develop and utilize outcomes assessment measures
  • Interact with and assist students in need of academic guidance
  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance and grades
  • Comply with institutional deadlines
  • Monitor student placement in courses and student progress
  • Provide students with meaningful feedback in a timely manner
  • Maintain office hours and availability to students
  • Communicate the cancellation of class meetings according to appropriate CWI instructional procedures. Successfully complete training in online and hybrid instruction
  • Focus on continuous improvement of one’s course curriculum, content delivery, assessment, and responsiveness to student needs
  • Seek peer feedback about one’s teaching
  • Manage classroom activities appropriately and monitor student conduct in accordance with CWI policy and procedure

Professional Development

  • Work with peers and supervisors to determine how one’s professional expertise and interests contribute to student and programmatic success
  • Create short- and long-term plans to achieve one’s goals to improve student and programmatic success
  • Participate in instructional evaluation processes
  • Set and achieve goals for professional development with one’s supervisor
  • Obtain and maintain teaching and industry certification as appropriate
  • Remain current in one’s field
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement emerging technology as related to discipline
  • Participate in college trainings as relevant

Institutional Engagement

  • Originate and recommend purchases of supplies and equipment where necessary
  • Work with supervisors and peers to understand and navigate the services, policies, programs, and organizational structures and functions of CWI
  • Forge professional relationships with college faculty, staff, administration, and community members
  • Effectively connect students to learning services and opportunities at the college and in the community, such as tutoring, clubs, internships, and other student services
  • Contribute to programmatic assessment and improvement
  • Serve on college, division, and/or department committees as elected or assigned
  • Advise student organizations as assigned
  • Attend and participate in scheduled meetings
  • Participate in CWI graduation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree from accredited institution in Computer Science, or a closely related field
  • Experience teaching secondary level students or community college students in field of study
  • Ability to impart excitement and enthusiasm into teaching
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of teaching methodologies including lectures, group activities, individual instruction, distance learning, online instruction, and teaching with technology
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to professional growth and development
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students
  • Ability to provide academic guidance to students
  • Proficiency in usage of internet, email, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software applications

SUPERIOR CANDIDATES

  • Successful experience teaching computer science or mathematics at a community college or with adult learners
  • Five years’ experience teaching computer science at a post- secondary level
  • Online and computer-assisted teaching experience
  • Experience using instructional technology
  • Experience teaching a range of courses
  • Experience with curriculum development or degree design
