- Functions as the NPS lead for establishing, implementing, and enforcing a servicewide structure fire prevention program. Serves as the national program manager and will be the primary point of contact for providing direction and guidance on structure fire prevention issues.
- Responsible for NPS oversight of fire code development, enforcement, protection of cultural resources from fire, life safety, and other fire prevention related issues.
- Manages an extremely complicated fire prevention program that requires close coordination with facilities managers, cultural resource specialists, historic architects, commercial service managers and regional and park fire prevention programs.
- Responsible for identifying the agencies fire prevention training needs and developing programs to meet those needs. Particpates in long term planning strategies to develop the structure fire program and ensure its future success.
- Develops budget needs, respond to budget information requests and execute their budget within the guidelines and laws of the NPS and federal government.
25% or less - Travel is required to attend trainings, conferences, workshops, and field visits.

Specialized Experience Requirements: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.
To qualify for the GS-12 grade level, 1 year of creditable specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: independently reading and interpreting fire codes and participating as a member of a team in the creation of policy for a large organization; managing a fire prevention program at the municipal, federal, or industrial level; under minimal supervision analyzing the fire and life safety risks of historic structures and/or buildings housing collections and submitting risk mitigation strategies to their supervisor; and developing courses and information to meet the fire prevention training needs of a local unit .
To qualify for the GS-13 grade level, 1 year of creditable specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: independently reading and interpreting fire codes and applying that to the creation of policy for a large organization; leading a fire prevention organization at the municipal, federal, or industrial level; independently analyzing the fire and life safety risks of historic structures and/or buildings housing collections and developing risk mitigation strategies; and developing courses and information to meet the fire prevention training needs for a large organzation.
If the position is filled at a lower grade level, subsequent promotion to the next grade level will be processed without further competition dependent upon administrative approval and the continuing need for an actual assignment and performance of higher-level duties.
Selective Placement Factor(s): This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.
- Prior firefighting experience is required. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous firefighting experience. This experience must be documented with specific dates in the online application or resume.

This is a secondary/administrative fire position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). While secondary positions are not subject to the maximum entry age policy, the selectee must have prior service in a primary position and meet the transfer requirement for movement from a primary to secondary position to be eligible for special retirement coverage.
